Preparing for the career fair

Students who show up prepared stand out. If you want to come across as confident and informed, take some time to do your research beforehand. Learn about the companies, the roles they offer, and think of a few meaningful questions to ask. Good questions can leave a strong impression on employers. Bring a notebook, use the notes app on your phone, or any digital tool you prefer to keep track of key points and contacts during the event.

A series of employer engagement sessions have been organised prior to the fair to help you prepare. Check out the exciting activities and register for your sessions.
Find out about the organisations that are attending the event and do your research to understand which employer meets your career objectives. Make a list of those you want to speak to at the Fair and workshops that you wish to attend.
Think about why you want to work for a particular organisation as the employers may ask about this.
- Prepare and practice a 30-second introduction that shows your strengths, skills, experience and interests.
- Practice your networking skills.
Make a list of questions and practice asking them. Focus on questions that will give you a better understanding of the organisation and provide you with information on:
- The selection process and what the organisation is looking for
- The application process
- Current issues in the industry
- Career pathways and the work role
- Other graduate experiences
Here are some sample questions:
- Can you advise on the organisation’s recruiting timetable? What is the next process?
- Can you tell me what you look for in applications and what should be avoided?
- Could you tell me the specific skills, attributes and experience you are seeking?
- What does “sound academic results” mean in your organisation? What are your academic requirements?
- What duties does a new graduate perform? Can you give me examples of what is expected?
- What training or staff development opportunities are provided to new graduates?
- With my particular career interest, are there other people in the organisation who I should contact?

Dressing to impress is pivotal for making a strong statement at a career fair. Opt for professional attire that exudes confidence and competence. Prepare your attire early.
For men, a well-fitted suit or dress pants with a collared shirt and tie, paired with polished shoes, can convey professionalism.
Women can choose from options like a tailored suit, a knee-length dress or skirt with a blouse, or dress pants paired with a blouse or sweater.
Ensure your outfit is clean, pressed, and free of wrinkles. Keep accessories minimal and conservative, and pay attention to grooming details like neat hair and trimmed nails. Remember, your attire is your first impression—make it count by presenting yourself as polished and ready for success.

What to expect at the career fair

The Future Forward Career Fair provides you with the opportunity to meet representatives from various organisations and also understand your career prospects in the various industries.

Always remember that your discipline does not define your career. Explore the various industries and discover what is available to you. The exhibiting employers are mainly recruiters. Recruiters can share with you the company's current information and hiring perspectives.

- Gather information to help you decide which organisations interest you
Employers are typically more impressed if you:
- Present well by dressing appropriately – the first impression counts. Dress casually, but neatly. Keep in mind that you could be introducing yourself to your future employer.
- Introduce yourself professionally (with brief details about your studies and career goals).
- Maintain eye contact.
- Be positive, enthusiastic and confident.
- Have prepared questions that demonstrate research and interest in the organisation.
- Show sensitivity to other students waiting to speak. Be courteous and know when it is time to move on. Offer a polite closure with something like 'It's been nice meeting you'.
- Don’t approach organisations to get freebies such as lollies or show bags, use tact and commonsense. If you show genuine interest in the organisation and its opportunities, you may be offered such things.
- Network, network, network. Make connections with people, including the recruiters, other students and career professionals. The more people in your network, the stronger it becomes..

After the fair

Your journey does not stop at the end of the fair. Check out the steps you need to take to fully utilise the fair experience.

After attending a Career Fair, organise the information you have collected by doing the following:
- Make notes about the organisations and employers while still fresh in your mind
- Set up a system to keep a record of your contacts
- Follow up with recruiters from organisations that interest you
Start learning about assessment centres and testing, other graduate selection techniques and practise your interview skills. Preparing in advance and practising in a supportive environment will boost your self-confidence and help you perform well when it's time for the real thing.
