Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (New students)

Tuition Fee Waiver and Stipend

  • New graduate research students enrolling to Monash Malaysia.
  • Current graduate research students at Monash Malaysia in their first year of enrolment.

Each scholarship comes with a full tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend of MYR2,950 (in 2026) as follows:

  • Research master’s degree - Two years full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement.
  • Doctoral degree - Three years and six months full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement until the scholarship end date or upon thesis submission; whichever is earlier.
  • Applicants must possess a minimum academic qualification of First Class Honours (H1) or it's equivalence (H1E) recognised by Monash Malaysia.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum admission (academic and English language proficiency) and scholarship eligibility requirements as published on the website for the relevant research degree and be enrolled or provided an offer to study at Monash University Malaysia.
  • The award of scholarships are based on an applicant’s academic record, research output and/or prior research experience.
  • Applicants must not have completed a graduate research masters or doctoral degree at the same course level (for example, are applying to undertake a second doctoral degree).
  • Applicants who receive a scholarship/financial assistance from an external sponsor(s) must obtain prior approval from the Scholarship office. The Scholarship office will confirm that there are no contradictory conditions from the sponsors. Consent from both MUM and sponsor(s) is required.
  • Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.

Current Students 

If you are a current graduate research student, you may apply for a GRES ONCE only within your first year of candidature using this form. Please discuss this with your supervisor before applying.

Graduate research students receiving the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship are required to contribute a maximum of 240 hours per year in academic support and/or research support activities as determined by the Managing School.

Scholarship Application Deadlines

The University offers four scholarship application* rounds per year:

  • Round 1: 13 February 2026
  • Round 2: 30 April 2026
  • Round 3: 31 July 2026
  • Round 4: 1 October 2026

*HDR Offer Letters must be received by these dates to be considered for scholarship.

Graduate Research Tuition Fee Waiver Scholarship (New students)

  • New graduate research students enrolling to Monash Malaysia.
  • Current graduate research students at Monash Malaysia in their first year of registration.

Either a 50%, 75% or 100% tuition fee waiver up to the duration stated below:

  • Research master’s degree - Two years full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement.
  • Doctoral degree - Three years, six months full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement until the scholarship end date or upon thesis submission; whichever is earlier.
  • Applicants must possess a minimum academic qualification of Second Class Honours (H2A) or it's equivalence (H2AE) recognised by Monash University.
  • Applicants must not have completed a graduate research masters or doctoral degree at the same course level (for example, are applying to undertake a second doctoral degree).
  • Applicants who receive a scholarship/financial assistance from an external sponsor(s) must obtain prior approval from the Scholarship office. The Scholarship office will confirm that there are no contradictory conditions from the sponsors. Consent from both MUM and sponsor(s) is required.
  • Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.

Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS)

Call for GEMS applications for the 2026 intake is now open!

The Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) program aims to bring the best and brightest PhD students to Monash University Malaysia, where they can work with international top-class research teams on some of the world's core challenges.

The scholarship includes a study-away program of up to 9 months at either Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

The GEMS program offers 15 scholarships each year, with each recipient receiving funding for 42 months. Visit the GEMS website for more information on GEMS.
  • Malaysian and International students are eligible.

Stipend
  • 42 months, including up to 9 months in Australia, Indonesia or India.
Duration, stipend and other benefits
  • The period in Malaysia: a monthly stipend of RM 2,950 for 33-36 months.
  • The period in Australia: a monthly stipend of RM 8,500 for up to 9 months.
  • The period in Indonesia (Monash University Indonesia) or India (IITB): a monthly stipend of RM2,950 up to 9 months, similar to the rate in Malaysia.
  • A grant of RM 9,000 is provided to subsidise costs, including visa, insurance and travel.
  • Depending on your school of enrolment, you may be funded for conference attendance, fieldwork or other activities relevant to your research project.
Tuition Fee Waiver
  • 100% tuition fee waiver up to a maximum of 4 years full-time equivalent under the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS), valued at RM 218,880 for international students and RM 193,920 for domestic students (at 2026 fee rates).
  • Applicants must possess a minimum academic qualification of First Class Honours (H1) or its equivalence (H1E) recognised by Monash Malaysia.
  • Other eligibility requirements apply and will be published in due course.

However, before applying for a GEMS, it is recommended that you first contact the main supervisor for your preferred GEMS research topic listed on the GEMS website. Please provide details of your academic background and achievements to the supervisor so that they can assess your suitability for the GEMS research topic of your interest.

Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) recipients are required to contribute a maximum of 240 hours per year in academic support and/or research support activities as determined by the Managing School.

GEMS recipients must commence their mobility term in the Host Institution (Australia/ Indonesia/ India) no later than 18 months from their course commencement date.

GEMS recipients must commence in the year the scholarship is awarded. The successful candidate is encouraged to enrol as soon as possible, and no later than December 2026.
