SCI3800 Science Internship

Key dates

1. Register and Attend the SCI3800 General Information Session
  - Session for Summer A 2026/2027 will be held on 23 April 2026 (Thursday) at 1pm in Seminar Room 4832
2. Research your internship companies. Start listing out the companies that you wish to do your internship with. Prepare your application documents (resume, cover letters etc.). This process should start at least a few months ahead.
  - The School will provide you with a list of companies that Science students have previously interned with. They may or may not be accepting interns this year. You can use this list as a starting point but can explore organizations outside of this list.

3. Request for Supporting letter if needed.
  - Some companies will require you to submit a University supporting letter. If you need one, you can submit your request via the SCI3800 Supporting Letter Request Form and the letter will be emailed to you within 5 working days.
  - You only need to submit the form once and a generic supporting letter will be issued to you which can be used to apply to multiple companies. Please use the letter responsibly.
  - The request form will close on 31 October 2026. No further supporting letter requests will be accepted after this date.
4. Seek Endorsement from the School via the SCI3800 Internship Endorsement Request Form.
  - You will need to seek endorsement from the school for your internship company as the school will need to validate if the company/position is suitable for SCI3800. Typically, students will need to intern at a Science-based company or position that allows you to demonstrate knowledge and skills acquired during your academic studies to the practical requirements of the workplace.
  - You are still required to request for endorsement even if you selected a company from the company list provided by the school.
  - The endorsement form will close on 31 October 2025. No further endorsement requests will be accepted after this date.
5. Apply to Enrol into SCI3800 unit
  - You will not be able to enrol into SCI3800 via WES yourself. The School will manually enrol you once we confirm you have secured an internship with an endorsed company.
  - We will verify if your company has been endorsed by the School before proceeding with enrolment.
  - Apply for enrollment by submitting your offer letter to the SCI3800 Enrolment Form.
  - This form will be open from 1 June to 6 November.
6. Attend the compulsory pre-departure and workplace safety briefing
  - Briefing session for Summer A 2026/2027 will be held on 19 or 20 November 2026* (Thursday or Friday) in Seminar Room 4832.
  - *The exact briefing timing will be confirmed via email to you
  - This briefing is compulsory for all students taking SCI3800 this year.
Note: The internship period is from 23 November 2026 - 12 February 2027, in which you will complete a minimum 8-weeks internship during this period.
Workplace conduct:
You are expected to represent Monash University in a manner that does not compromise the integrity, reputation or relationship of the University and the School of Science with the participating companies, in any way.
Submission of biweekly summary
This is a short journal (one paragraph of no more than 300 words) to dictate the activities and experience gained during internship, written and submitted every two weeks.
You are required to submit the remaining assessments after completing your internship. Detailed description and timelines can be found on Moodle nearer the internship commencement date.
SCI3800 Science internship Assessment:
1. Induction quiz (5%)
The quiz will be opened before the start of the internship to test the basic level of practical knowledge and judgement that students need, so students can make the most from the internship in a proper manner.
2. Employment assessment (20%)
Students will be assessed by their immediate supervisors on conduct, attitude, communication skills, competency, and knowledge, among others.
3. Video presentation (20%)
The video presentation assignment is for students to share their personal goals, to reflect on their learning and personal insights that were gained during the internship.
4. Project report (55%)
- In order to meet the academic requirements of the internship, students are required to submit an internship report corresponding to the following requirements and recommendations：
1. A brief description/introduction of the company & assigned task
2. A brief description of what was learned (knowledge acquired, technical skills acquired, hands-on learning process)
3. A brief conclusion of your learning experience during the internship and demonstrate a comprehensive and considered knowledge of the discipline of your internship.
