On unit enrolment for exchange

For unit enrolment, you will still need to enrol in Malaysian units for the next semester. You can only change your unit enrolment to the approved Clayton units, after you have received and accepted the Global Intercampus Exchange Program offer.

Recommended semester for exchange

- Bachelor of Medical Bioscience/ Bachelor of Food Science and Technology
  • February intake students: Apply in Year 1 Semester 2 to exchange in Year 2 Semester 1
  • July/ October intake students: Apply in Year 2 Semester 1 to exchange in Year 2 Semester 2
- Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Applied Data Science

Students can participate in their second or third year as long as the core units they need to enrol at Monash Malaysia are offered at Monash Australia

Exchange Tips

Finding similar units in Monash Australia

To know if a particular Monash Malaysia unit is offered in Monash Australia during your preferred exchange semester, you will need to check the ‘Offerings’ section in the Monash handbook.

  • S1-01-CLAYTON-ON-CAMPUS refers to Semester one (March-June)
  • S2-01-CLAYTON-ON-CAMPUS refers to Semester two (July-November)

Remember to check that you are referring to the current year handbook when looking for unit information. The handbook year is indicated on the top right of the unit handbook page.

Equivalent units

Some units are not directly offered in the Clayton campus but they have equivalent units offered there instead. The following Monash Australia units have been assessed and are considered equivalent to Monash Malaysia units:

  • BIO2011 is equivalent to BIO2810
  • BIO2040 is equivalent to ENV2726
  • BCH2011 is equivalent to BTH2741
  • MIC2011 is equivalent to BTH2830
  • SCI1000 is equivalent to SCI2010
If any of your core units are listed above, you will take the equivalent Clayton unit during your exchange semester.

Elective units

Use the Monash handbook to search for units you are interested in taking as electives. Make use of the filter function in the handbook to narrow your search.

You should take note of the following points when selecting your electives:

  • Make sure you meet the pre-requisite requirements to take a unit.
  • The electives must be offered in Clayton campus. You are not allowed to take units from different campuses in the same semester.
  • Remember to observe the following course rules:
    • You can take a maximum of 10 Level 1 units throughout your course.
    • You must ensure that you complete ten science listed units at Levels 2 and 3 with a minimum of four units at Level 3.

Pre-approved course maps

The following course maps have been pre-approved by the School. If you are using one of the course plans below, you do not need to have it reviewed by the Education Management Office.

Note: By submitting the pre-approved course maps for your exchange study plan, you acknowledge that your unit enrolment matches the pre-approved maps. If your plan and actual unit enrollment is different, your study plan application may be rejected.

Bachelor of Medical Bioscience

Bachelor of Food Science and Technology

The international Exchange program allows you to study a semester or two at any one of Monash's partner universities located in 30 countries across United Kingdom, Europe, The Americas, Asia and New Zealand.

If you are interested in applying for an international exchange, it is strongly recommended that you begin planning early. Applications also start one year in advance for International Exchange. When doing course planning, it is highly recommended that you reserve your elective units for the semester you wish to go on exchange to ensure a smoother application process.

How to apply

  1. Read Monash Abroad’s International Exchange Program website
    • You should familiarize yourself with the entry requirements, important dates and application process. These are matters that you have to manage yourself.
  2. Determine if your course progression allows you to go for exchange
    • Identify the units you need to take during the semester you wish to go for exchange.
    • The more electives you have in the exchange semester, the easier it will be to go for IE.
  3. Select your preferred partner universities and search for suitable units offered there
    • Search for your preferred partner institute using the Program Search webpage. Read the partner university page carefully on their exchange details. Each university will have different requirements.
    • Ensure you will be taking a full-time load at your host institution (equivalent to 18 - 24 Monash credits) when selecting your units. You can check the credit load equivalency in the 'Full-time Credit Load Equivalents' table under the "Academic details" tab in the partner university's page. This table tells you how many credit points you will need to take during exchange. Sometimes, you may need to take 2-3 partner units to make up for ONE 6 credits Monash unit.
    • Partner institution units need to be at least 80% similar in content to Monash units to be considered equivalent.
    • Elective units do not need to match MUM units.
    • Remember to check the following:
      1. Are the host units available for exchange students?
      2. Are the host units offered during your exchange semester? (Please refer to the Monash Study Abroad Program Search or the institution’s website for the Academic Calendar if you are unsure.)
    • Download the unit syllabus as you need to submit it in your study plan application
      1. A detailed unit syllabus should include unit description, learning objectives, learning outcomes, assessment required, credit point, number of contact hours per week/ semester, weekly topics, and required reading/ textbook(s)
  4. Draft your exchange study plan
    • Use the School of Science Exchange Course Map Planner to draft your exchange study plan.
    • Your exchange study plan needs to include all 24 units of your course. This is important for the school to check if you still meet all your course requirements if you’re going for exchange.
  5. Submit your IE application via the university brochure on the Monash Study Abroad Program Search page
    • Make sure you submit your application before the deadline including your study plans. Incomplete Study Plans will reduce your chance to be approved for exchange.

Important notes:

Limits on credit given for undergraduate courses

Students must complete at Monash University at least 48 points, comprising not less than 36 points of science units including a minimum of 24 points of level-three units, of which at least 18 points must be in the science area of specialisation (major sequence).

This means if you wish to apply to exchange in your Year 3, you need to plan well and ensure you have sufficient level-three units to complete at Monash University (4 core level-three units or 3 core level-three units with 1 science elective level-three unit).

Bachelor of Science students should remember to observe the following course rules:

  • You can take a maximum of 10 Level 1 units throughout your course.
  • You must ensure that you complete ten science listed units at Levels 2 and 3 with a minimum of four units at Level 3.
