1. Tell us about this scholarship.

The Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship from Monash University Malaysia is a prestigious scholarship awarded to outstanding PhD students in recognition of their academic achievements and research potential. It covers tuition fees and provides a stipend for living expenses, enabling recipients to focus on their studies and research.

2. Why did you apply for this scholarship?

I applied for this scholarship because I wanted to study under the guidance of my supervisor, Dr Juliana French, a renowned researcher in the field of Consumer Culture Theory whose work connects with my research interest. Further, she supervised me during my Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Commerce, and my experience working with her was amazingly delightful. After having such a great experience, I couldn’t work with anybody but her.

3. How did you choose your planned program of study?

I chose my program of study, a PhD in Marketing, based on my previous experience in the industry and my interest in the subject matter. I am a qualitative researcher, and my interest lies in the intersection of consumption, marketplace and culture. There is an ever greater need for understanding consumer behaviour from cultural, sociological and political perspectives. This program enabled me to pursue these interests with a supervisor who is an expert on these perspectives.

4. What do you hope to gain from the Monash experience?

My Monash experience couldn’t have been better, especially on the people front. PhD journey is often said to be stressful, lonely, and full of doubts. I am fortunate that I have got amazing supervisors and very supportive colleagues. I have enjoyed every day of my Monash experience, and I believe the future will be the same.

I want to better understand my research and its impact on consumers and society. I also hope to develop my research skills, learn from other scholars and experts, and make meaningful contributions to the field. Furthermore, I aim to expand my professional network and establish relationships with experts in the field that will last a lifetime.

5. How has the scholarship assisted you?

The scholarship has been extremely helpful in enabling me to pursue my PhD studies without the burden of financial stress. It has allowed me to focus entirely on my research and take advantage of the many resources and opportunities available at Monash University Malaysia. Additionally, receiving this scholarship has been a great honour and has given me recognition for my academic achievements and research potential.
