Monash MIB: Truly International

Lead with a global perspective.

Pursuing a postgraduate education in business is a common choice for those looking to deepen their corporate understanding or transition into a career in the business world.

There are two degrees that often come into discussion when selecting a business-related postgraduate course: a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of International Business (MIB).

The two courses undoubtedly cover similar topics when it comes to business fundamentals. However, there are a few differences that distinguish the two and will prove essential when deciding which is most suited to your specific needs.

The power of youth

On average, people who enrol in an MBA program tend to be a little older compared to those studying an MIB. This is because MBA programs typically require a minimum amount of work experience before enrolment, while students are eligible to enrol in an MIB immediately after a degree.

Pursuing an MIB allows you to benefit from several qualities unique to a younger cohort. A study suggests that younger students are more open-minded to discussing new ideas, providing them with the opportunity to explore fresh perspectives that are free from biases that may come with more experienced peers.

Being surrounded by a youthful cohort who tends to be more energetic and driven when it comes to learning new ideas will likely inspire you to share the same enthusiasm and be a motivator as you progress through the course. You’ll get a chance to build valuable connections that will serve you well for years to come.

An international focus

There is a fair amount of overlap when it comes to the material covered in an MBA and MIB, including topics such as accounting principles, economic theory and business statistics that focus more on foundational business knowledge.

However, as you delve deeper into the curricula, the differences become clearer. For example, an MBA program typically covers general business principles such as management theory and business communications and has a critical focus on administrative problems.

An MIB, in comparison, chooses to explore economic and political dynamics when observed in an international setting as well as the unique challenges that businesses face when operating on a global scale.

Given that Malaysia’s economic position relies heavily on international trade with exports valued at 68.9% of our gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021, MIB graduates will find their skills in demand to facilitate trade deals and mediate global partnerships between local and foreign companies.

A variety of career paths

MBA graduates are typically able to find work across a variety of industries and sectors such as finance, insurance, banking, trade or government.

As a comprehensive postgraduate business degree, the MIB program offers similar versatility in terms of job opportunities, but it also provides additional career choices that involve an international focus. A key advantage of such a qualification is that it gives you an edge in seeking job opportunities with multinational corporations or local companies looking to expand overseas.

With in-depth knowledge of foreign business policies provided in an MIB, you can confidently play an active role in a company’s strategic management and analysis in its international ventures.

You’ll also have the option to work as a third-party consultant in other organisations, advising them on international business management and export-import strategies.
