1.  Tell us about this scholarship.

The Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES) is a scholarship for qualifiable PhD students offered by Monash University Malaysia. It comes with a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend, which allows students to cover their tuition and living expenses etc.

2.  In what ways do you believe this scholarship aligns with your academic and career aspirations?

This scholarship has provided me with a good opportunity to focus on pursuing my postgraduate study and engaging in my research. As a PhD student who receives the GRES, I also have the opportunity to engage in academic support and research support activities, which are extremely helpful in gaining clarity about my academic and professional interests, paving the way for future success.

3.  What motivated you to pursue this particular scholarship opportunity?

I made up my mind to pursue this particular scholarship opportunity as it would not only help alleviate the financial burden of paying for the tuition fee but also offer me the opportunity to concentrate fully on my studies, research, and extracurricular activities.

4.  In what ways has the scholarship played a role in shaping your overall university experience?

The scholarship serves as a form of recognition for my academic achievements, talents and research output, which has motivated me to maintain academic standards and actively engage in campus life. Furthermore, it provides me with networking opportunities, such as meeting other scholars, attending events, and getting in touch with alumni, which are crucial throughout my university experience.

5.  Are there specific challenges or milestones that stand out as crucial to your growth?

It was quite challenging for me, especially at the beginning of my study, since I did not have extensive laboratory experience during my undergraduate study. To overcome this, I spend a lot of time practising my lab technique and familiarising myself with the lab equipment. I also seek help from my supervisors and seniors when I face any problems.

6.  Drawing from your experience, what advice would you give to students considering applying for scholarships?

I encourage students who consider applying for scholarships to put more effort into these particular areas, which include achieving excellent results in academics, publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals, and participating in extracurricular activities and voluntary work (e.g. peer mentoring programs).
