Costs and funding
With the partner university exchange agreements in place, you pay your tuition fees in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) to Monash University Malaysia. You do not need to pay tuition fees to the host university where you pursuing your exchange semester.
Please note that different tuition fee arrangement may apply to Short Term Programs.
If you plan to study overseas with a university that is not a Monash partner, you’ll pay fees directly to that university, in place of your Monash fees.
Living and travel costs are your responsibility
Living costs vary from one country to another and is dependent on your lifestyle and the duration of your stay.
Ensure that you have sufficient funds to pay for the necessities such as a return flight tickets, travel insurance, visa fees, food, accommodation, transportation, utilities, entertainment and study materials. Some host universities may require you to pay for orientation activities and compulsory field trips as well.
The exchange application includes a budget worksheet, which you should take seriously when completing. To make sure your experience is everything you want it to be, think about the exchange rate in your host country, how much living costs are and make a plan to save money right up until you depart.
Financial Assistance for Outbound Students
Monash University Malaysia offers a range of financial assistance to support eligible students participating in outbound mobility programs. Depending on the program you are undertaking, you may be eligible for travel grants, scholarships or external funding opportunities.
Travel Grants
Travel grants are made available to all approved Monash Malaysia students (including international students) going on the Semester Exchange program to partner universities or the Monash Global Campus Intensive (MGCI) program in Prato, Italy.
There are no travel grants available for students participating in the Semester in Australia program at Monash University Australia.
The travel grants will be credited to your Monash account approximately two to four weeks before your overseas study program commences.
Please note:
- Approval and the final decision will be made by Monash Abroad when assessing your eligibility to receive the Monash Abroad Travel Grants.
- If you exchange to the same host university for two consecutive semesters, you will receive one travel grant for your entire time abroad.
- You may not be eligible for funding if you are receiving any scholarships or financial assistance from an external organisation for any overseas study-related expenses (travel, visa, accommodation, living allowance etc). Please check with your sponsor in advance.
- You are not eligible for funding if you are applying for the Independent Study Abroad program to a non-partner university.
- The Travel Grant is awarded to you subject to the condition that you participate fully and complete the program. Should you terminate your program prematurely without good cause, the Travel Grant will be revoked and you will be required to return any travel grants paid out earlier to you.
Scholarships
There are scholarships available to Monash Malaysia students who wish to pursue the Semester in Australia program.
Ng Kong Lin Family Intercampus Scholarship
- The Ng Kong Lin Family Intercampus Scholarship will enable academically bright but financially disadvantaged students from Monash Malaysia to undertake a one-semester exchange to Monash Australia on the Global Intercampus Program.
- This is to give them an opportunity to embrace the international experience, moving them towards accepting and understanding an array of different cultural and community perspectives that would eventually help them in becoming global citizens.
Australia Awards - Malaysia Semester Program
- The Australia Awards – Malaysia Semester Program is an Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) initiative, supported by Monash University Malaysia.
- It provides academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students with a fully funded opportunity to study abroad for a semester at Monash University Australia.
External funding opportunities
Monash University Malaysia students may be eligible for alternative sources of funding to participate in Semester Exchange programs. You submit your application for funding directly to the relevant funding provider.
Please note that you must ensure that you have sufficient financial resources to pursue an exchange program. You must not depend on securing funding from the sources listed below to be able to participate in the exchange programs.
Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) – for students
- Scholarship Overview: Funded by the Government of Canada to strengthen academic ties with ASEAN countries.
- Eligibility: Open to students from ASEAN member states enrolled in exchange programs with Canadian universities.
- Coverage: Includes tuition waiver, living allowance, airfare, and health insurance.
- Duration: Supports short‑term exchange (4–8 months).
- Application Process: Students apply through Monash Abroad; nominations are submitted to Canadian institutions for final approval.
- Key Considerations: Highly competitive; preference given to students demonstrating academic excellence and leadership potential.

- During your application for the Semester Exchange program, you must make known your intention to be considered for this scholarship.
- Due to the scholarship application timelines, it is anticipated that students may only be eligible to receive the funding if they apply for the Semester Exchange program for Monash Semester 2 (July-November).
Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) for Exchange Students
- Scholarship Overview: Funded by the Korean government, the GKS supports international students undertaking exchange programs at Korean universities.
- Eligibility: Open to nominated exchange students from partner universities; applicants must meet academic and health requirements set by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED).
- Coverage: Provides monthly living allowance, settlement support, round‑trip airfare, and medical insurance during the exchange period.
- Duration: Typically covers one semester (6 months) or up to one academic year.
- Application Process: Students apply through their home university’s international office; nominations are forwarded to NIIED for final selection.
- Key Considerations: Highly competitive; applicants should prepare strong academic records and demonstrate clear motivation for studying in Korea.

Val d’Oise scholarship for exchange at Essec Business School in France
- Scholarship Overview: Offered by the Val d’Oise Department to support international exchange students at Essec Business School
- Eligibility: Available to Monash Malaysia students of Japanese nationality nominated for exchange at Essec.
- Coverage: Provides financial support toward living costs in France; amount varies annually.
- Duration: Typically covers one semester of study.
- Application Process: Apply via Monash Abroad; Essec coordinates with Val d’Oise authorities for award disbursement.
- Key Considerations: Limited slots; priority given to students with strong academic records and clear motivation for studying in France.
- Students must stay for a minimum of six months and may remain for up to ten months.
- The scholarship application period usually opens in April and closes in May. Selected recipients will be informed of the scholarship application outcome at the beginning of June.
- Due to the scholarship application timelines, it is anticipated that students may only be eligible to receive the funding if they apply for the Semester Exchange program for Monash Semester 2 (July-November).
Partner university funding for exchange students
- Some partner universities may provide funding for incoming exchange students. Please be sure to research if you meet the eligibility criteria for this funding.
Travel Insurance
Monash University Malaysia now arranges all travel insurance for its students on overseas programs. The University has adopted this arrangement to ensure that all its students will have access to suitable travel insurance which also provides a resource to enable it to help its students in the event of any future emergency.
You will automatically be provided coverage once you hae been approved for travel.
