The Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi) recently held a networking event in Kuala Lumpur to celebrate its 20th anniversary in Southeast Asia. The event brought together successful Malaysian women from diverse backgrounds who have made their mark in health and science.

Professor Gan Siew Hua, Head of Pharmacy School, Monash University Malaysia was one of the invited speakers who shared her insights on the challenges and opportunities for women in the field of science, investment in research and development, and empowering women in R&D in the Global South.

"As women in science, we must continue to strive for excellence and push boundaries to create a more equitable and inclusive research environment. It's not just about achieving success for ourselves, but also paving the way for the next generation of female scientists and lifting others to grow in a supportive environment. It boils down to having a fierce dedication and commitment in doing what we love for the betterment of humankind while at the same time maintaining a healthy work-family balance," Professor Gan shared.

Dr Luis Pizarro, DNDi's recently appointed Executive Director, was a notable presence at the event. He delivered the opening remark and joined the roundtable discussion, introducing himself as a feminist.

During the roundtable discussion, the attendees discussed various issues, including the glass ceiling and the need for sponsors who can help women advance their careers. They stressed that women need sponsors who will stick their necks out to recommend and support other women. The discussion also covered the importance of personal branding, creating networking opportunities for women, and setting a positive example for younger generations.

The event also addressed serious issues such as sexual harassment, domestic violence, and workplace discrimination. Many of the women present shared how they felt lonely in their careers as the only women in their fields. They emphasised the importance of gender diversity at top management and called for action to support diversity in all forms.

The event was an important milestone in celebrating women in science in Malaysia and promoting their continued success in the field. The attendees issued a strong call for action for women who are already at the pinnacle to support gender diversity at top management while also taking care of racial, minority, and other diversity issues.

Undoubtedly, this event played a crucial role in commemorating the achievements of women in science in Malaysia and advocating for their sustained growth and success in the field.
