The School of Information Technology (IT) alumna credits her time at the university for laying the foundation for her career in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. From engaging in industry-based learning to collaborating on real-world projects, her Monash journey has shaped her technical expertise and problem-solving approach.

Jia Hui reflects on how Monash’s well-rounded curriculum provided her with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. “My experience at Monash played a crucial role in shaping my career in AI and data science. The exposure to real-world projects, industry collaborations, and hands-on learning experiences helped me gain confidence in working with data-driven solutions,” she shares. The balance between technical depth and industry relevance gave her a strong foundation to navigate the fast-evolving field of data science.

A key milestone in Jia Hui’s journey was her participation in the Industry-Based Learning (IBL) program. Over six months, she worked at a software company, where she gained first-hand exposure to project management and software development processes. “While my internship wasn’t directly related to data science, it was a valuable experience that allowed me to explore different aspects of the tech industry. I learned how projects are planned, executed, and delivered in a real business environment,” she explains.

Another defining moment was her final-year project, where her team collaborated with the Sunway Group on the Human-Object Interaction for Weapon Detection project. This project allowed her to apply AI techniques to solve a real-world problem, reinforcing her passion for developing impactful and ethical AI solutions. “It was a challenging but rewarding experience,” Jia Hui recalls. “It showed me the real-world impact of AI and strengthened my belief in using technology for positive change.”

Beyond academics, Jia Hui cherishes the memories she made with her coursemates. “The late-night discussions over assignments, the collaborative spirit in group projects, and the lasting friendships I built along the way all played a pivotal role in shaping my personal and professional growth,” she reflects.

For future students, Jia Hui offers valuable advice: “Monash is more than just a place to earn a degree, it’s a gateway to endless opportunities. Step out of your comfort zone, engage in industry projects, and build connections with your peers and professors. Don’t be afraid to take on challenges, they will shape you into a stronger and more resilient individual. Most importantly, enjoy the journey, because the experiences and lessons you gain here will stay with you for a lifetime.”
