1. Tell us about your scholarship.
The Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) is a scholarship offered by Monash University Malaysia for PhD students. It provides full tuition coverage, a living stipend, and the opportunity to spend up to a year in Australia pursuing research in a topic or field of choice, offering both financial support and international research experience.
2. How does this scholarship support your academic journey and career aspirations?
GEMS supports my academic journey by providing financial stability, allowing me to focus entirely on my research without worrying about expenses. The mobility program is especially valuable, giving me the chance to access expertise, advanced facilities, and collaborative opportunities that strengthen my project. In terms of career aspirations, this experience helps me build an international research network and broaden my skills, which are important for my goal of becoming an independent researcher and contributing impactful work in my field.
3. What motivated you to apply for this scholarship and pursue your current field of study?
I was motivated to apply for GEMS because it provides the support and opportunities I need to grow as a researcher. My current field of study offers the essential training I need, from hands-on laboratory skills to hospital-based training required for my pharmacy licensing. I am eager to become a pharmacist who is not only equipped with strong clinical skills but also capable of conducting laboratory research, reflecting my long-term interest in bridging practice and research. On top of that, the research topic closely aligns with my personal interests, which makes the work both meaningful and sustainable for me. This combination of support, training, and alignment with my passion is what encouraged me to pursue the scholarship.
4. In what ways has the scholarship played a role in shaping your overall university experience?
GEMS has significantly shaped my university experience in several ways. The mobility program provides valuable international exposure, allowing me to learn new technologies and enhance collaboration between Malaysia and Australia. It has also eased my financial burden by covering tuition fees and living expenses, which not only reduces pressure on my family but also allows me to continue pursuing my hobbies and maintain a balanced lifestyle. Beyond financial support, access to a wide variety of resources, professional development opportunities, training, and exposure to experts have enriched my academic journey. Finally, the supportive environment and kindness from people around me have made my university life truly meaningful.
5. Are there specific challenges or milestones that stand out as crucial to your growth, and how have you worked through them?
One of the key challenges I faced as a PhD student without a Master’s background was that my research skills were not as developed as those of my seniors. Initially, I lacked specific laboratory skills and had to spend extra time familiarising myself with equipment, troubleshooting experiments, and seeking advice from others. While this was initially a limitation, it became an important driver for my growth. I truly appreciate the support and guidance of those around me, and I feel very grateful and fulfilled by the progress I have made. Moving forward, I am committed to continuously learning and improving myself as a researcher.
6. Can you share about your current research project? What problem are you addressing, and why does it matter?
My current research project investigates the potential of a natural compound extract in alleviating skin ageing, a condition that affects people all across the world, impacting not only physical appearance but also quality of life. By combining laboratory research with formulation science, I aim to explore the potential benefits of this compound while improving its stability and toxicity, translating the potential of natural remedies into practical applications for consumers.
7. How do you hope your research will contribute to your field, community, or society at large?
My research will make a meaningful contribution to the fields of dermatology and cosmeceuticals by providing evidence-based insights into the use of natural products for skin care. By combining natural compounds and formulations, my work aims to offer safe and effective alternatives for consumers seeking effective anti-ageing solutions. Beyond practical applications, I also hope to advance scientific knowledge in the dermatology field and contribute to the development of interventions that provide sustainable choices for the broader community.
8. What advice would you give to students who are thinking about applying for scholarships or starting their own research projects?
I encourage students to explore scholarships such as GEMS and to look out for the research topics they are genuinely interested in, ideally those that also allow them to make meaningful contributions to the community. Enjoying research is crucial, as pursuing a PhD is challenging and filled with setbacks. Don’t be afraid to learn or to fail, as these experiences will ultimately be valuable and rewarding.
