Gain industry versatility with a Mechanical Engineering degree
10 September 2022
A mechanical engineering degree helps to pave the way to a lucrative career across multiple industries, from developing household appliances to automobile manufacturing. As Malaysia is one of the world’s largest exporters of oil and liquified natural gases, there is a high demand for specialised equipment as well as the expertise of highly-skilled mechanical engineers.
Enrolling in a mechanical engineering degree at Monash Malaysia will provide you with the skills to excel in these industries, such as world-class technical capabilities, effective interpersonal skills, and the knowledge to solve engineering problems in an efficient and creative manner.
Build the pillars for your career
The first year of Monash Malaysia’s Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) helps you lay a strong foundation in mathematics and sciences to navigate the unique and varied engineering challenges of the modern day. This includes the introduction to the broad concepts of chemistry, physics, materials, mathematics and biology among others.
While these may not seem like your typical engineering subjects, they can be extremely relevant. For example, a strong grasp of chemistry would be useful when a client requests an eco-friendly mechanical design that minimises waste products such as carbon dioxide or spent solvents, while an understanding of human physiology would help you in designing surgery-assisting robotics.
As you progress into the second and third years of your degree, you will be guided towards a deep understanding of efficient mechanical design from both simple tools to complex contraptions. This ultimately culminates during your fourth year where you will undergo an independent final-year project in an area of your choosing, in addition to three electives, for specialisation purposes.
Compete with the best
A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that both peer competition and cooperation are great ways to build intrinsic motivation and boost one’s performance.
Monash Malaysia offers numerous opportunities for students to participate in distinguished engineering challenges where you can put your theoretical knowledge to the test, hone practical skills, and prove yourself on an international stage.
Additionally, these competitions provide the ideal platform to network with talented peers and gain exposure to key players in the engineering industry, opening doors for future employment opportunities and potential partnerships down the road.
Some of the most notable events our talented students have entered are the Shell Eco-marathon Asia, Thailand SAE Auto Challenge-Student Formula and National Chem-E-Car Malaysia.
Gain work experience with engineering projects and internships
Monash believes the best engineering education blends classroom learning and practical experience.Working on mechanical engineering projects lets you put theory into practice, applying the taught methodology first-hand and crystallising the knowledge you learnt in class.
Upon finishing your third year, you will go for a 12-week work placement at a leading company where you will gain valuable insights into the working world and enhance your technical and professional skills under the guidance of industry professionals. Our students have previously interned with key industry players such as ExxonMobil, Shell, IBM and more.
Be a part of a greater community
Excelling as a mechanical engineer goes beyond technical capability and theoretical expertise; you must also have strong interpersonal skills to work in a team effectively and be able to lead with confidence and integrity.
The Student Leaders Network program is designed to push our high-achieving engineering students to even greater heights. It encompasses several events all year round, including talks and presentations, networking evenings and a leadership summit that reveal new perspectives on how one advances from being a good engineer to an exceptional one.
We also have many student-run engineering clubs, such as Institute of Mechanical Engineers - Monash University Malaysia Student Chapter (IMechE) and Monash Women Engineers (MWE), that regularly hosts career-driven events as well as social get-togethers to help you stay connected with your fellow engineers.
With many tight-knit and passionate student communities to choose from, you will get to work alongside like-minded peers to tackle real-world challenges, take on fulfilling projects and drive innovation and change in the name of progress.
