Who was/is your role model and/or leadership mentor?

My mother has always been my role model growing up as she has instilled positive qualities such as being responsible and accountable and striving for excellence in everything that I do. Meanwhile, my direct supervisor(s), past and present, were influential in my leadership, especially my current supervisor.

What are key qualities that have defined your leadership style or career journey?

Key qualities that I hone in shaping my career journey are:

  1. Respect everyone that I work with and recognise their contributions in completing a task/project.
  2. Being open to constructive feedback from all stakeholders.
  3. Transparency and consistency in decision-making.
  4. Not being afraid to make mistakes, learn from mistakes, and do better.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career?

Navigating through power differentials is one of the toughest hurdles in my career because I have served in leadership positions that involve implementing policies and procedures without having direct authority over those to whom the policies and procedures are applicable. Laying out clear justifications and continual communication becomes crucial to address the hurdles - but I have to say, I learn a lot from the hurdles and how to do better in my job.

What are the ways you stay grounded and take care of yourself?

My family and friends are my pillars to keep me grounded and not forget my principles. My way of self-care is by participating in activities that I enjoy, taking adequate breaks from work and my other commitments, and occasionally treating myself to a gift or a nice meal.

What is your message to the next generation?

My message for the next generation - Please do not live based on how others stereotype women. Identify your passion, know your strengths and weaknesses, set realistic goals and take steady strides to achieve your ambition and impact on the community!
