Using ME for entry into a Monash degree
Once you have successfully completed the Monash English (ME) course, you will have met the Monash University English language requirements for all Monash University undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees except for:
- Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine
- Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Commerce
- Master of Clinical Psychology
- Master of Professional Counselling
Information on using ME for entry into a PhD, or other research degrees is available in the Graduate Research Handbook (see English Language Proficiency).
It is important to note that the Malaysian Government also sets a minimum English language requirement for each Monash University degree. Should the Monash English’s requirement be lower than the government requirement for your destination degree, the higher requirement will still apply.
For example, the Malaysian Government generally sets the English requirement for Postgraduate courses at IELTS 6.0/TOEFL iBT 60/PTE Academic 59/C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 169, though it may vary among courses. Based on this scenario, there are two ways you can approach this:
- Enter ME with an IELTS minimum overall score of 6.0 or equivalent (accepted by Malaysian Government); or
- Join ME with a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent (see Entry Requirements table above) and sit for an IELTS (or equivalent test) once you have completed ME, and achieve a minimum overall score of 6.0 or equivalent (accepted by Malaysian Government).
Hence, Monash University reserves the right to ask you to undertake an approved English proficiency test to meet the English course requirements set by the Malaysian Government, even you have successfully completed Monash English. When you apply, you will be advised if you have met the Malaysian government requirements. You may also check with the Admissions Office on the government requirement of your destination degree to prepare for your additional English proficiency test (if required).
