Fee-paying Study Abroad

What is study abroad?

Studying abroad at Monash Malaysia is available to any university student – regardless whether your home institution has an exchange agreement in place with us.

If your home university is our partner, we will classify you as an international exchange student and you can take advantage of streamlined application processes and seamless integration into the Monash way of life. If your university is not a Monash partner, you can still exchange to Monash Malaysia as a fee-paying study abroad student.

What does fee-paying mean?

When you’re classified as a fee-paying study abroad student and depending on the units you select, you will pay Monash Malaysia tuition fees for one or two semesters of study.

During your time at Monash Malaysia, you will have access to academic support and services as provided to existing Monash students and may participate in the special packages that include excursions or internships.

Eligibility criteria

Before you apply for this program, you should check that you meet the following entry requirements:

  • You have completed at least one full year at your home institution by the time your Study Abroad program commences;
  • You have achieved one of at least a 60% overall average, or a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or a ‘C’ average in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), or the home institution equivalent;
  • You meet our minimum English language proficiency requirements; and
  • You have met all the pre-requisites of the units you would like to study at Monash University as published in the Handbook.

How does it work?

As a study abroad student you will:

  • enrol full-time (18-24 credit points) at a Monash campus
  • pay tuition fees to Monash or your study abroad partner/agent
  • receive a Monash academic transcript with grades upon completion
  • get help finding accommodation
  • receive support and services while you’re with us

You remain as a registered student of your home institution and will graduate with a degree from your home institution.

What can I study?

Monash Malaysia offers a vast array of units for you to study. While unit syllabuses are similar across all Monash campuses, you will find that each Monash campus also offers localised units providing a unique exchange experience at these specific campuses.

Popular localised units that are offered at Monash Malaysia include for example, the Malaysian Studies, Contemporary Feminisms in Asia as well as Genders, sexualities and religions in Southeast Asia from the School of Arts and Social Sciences. Other interesting units include Environmental Science: A Southeast Asian Perspective offered at the School of Science as well as Leadership in Asia, Business in Asia and Islamic Business offered at the School of Business.

For language enthusiasts, the Malay Language is a non-credit earning unit, ideal for those who wish to learn the local language during their exchange in Malaysia.

To start searching for Monash units you can study at Monash, please check the Monash Handbook.

Steps :

  1. Use the “Advanced Search” tool to set your preferred filters
  2. Click on “Units
  3. In the left-hand menu, select “Location” and tick “Malaysia
  4. In the same left-hand menu, select “Implementation Year” and tick the year you wish to study in
  5. In the same left-hand menu, select “Level” and tick whether Undergraduate or Postgraduate, depending on the level you are looking for
  6. In the same left-hand menu, select “Teaching Period” and tick "First Semester" or "Second Semester", depending on which Monash semester you wish to study with us.

The unit must be indicated as Yes under “Open to exchange or study abroad students?” in order for you to be able to enrol for the unit.

Things to remember:

  • Avoid Capstone units
  • If you are an undergraduate student, choose Level 1,2, 3 or 4 units. This is indicated in the unit code. For e.g. MKW 1002 is a Level 1 unit, indicated by the first digit. You should not choose units that are Level 5 and above.
  • If you are a postgraduate student, you may choose Level 5 units and above.

You can refer to our Monash terminology webpage for an explanation on the terms used in the catalogue.

How much will it cost?

The cost for your program will differ depending on your choice of units, your eligibility for a scholarship from your home country, and your decision to live on or off-campus.

Refer to our financial information page for details about fees, visas and insurance.

Ready to apply?

my.application is the online portal where students can digitally apply for a study abroad place at Monash University at our Australian and Malaysian campuses.

There are two scenarios in which you will use this portal:

1. Your home institution or your agent, if you are using one, has nominated you for a study abroad (fee-paying) place at Monash. In this instance, the portal uses information submitted by your home institution/agent and pre-fills some parts of the application; or

2. You have decided to pursue study abroad at Monash independently because your home institution has no special arrangement with Monash to accept its students and you don’t have an agent.

If your home institution has a study abroad arrangement with Monash, you must speak to your home advisor before you apply using this method.

Students applying independently can submit their applications starting here; use the Inbound Student Applicant Guide for assistance.

If you have any questions about preparing your application, please email us at mum.monashabroad@monash.edu.
