As you wander through the vibrant streets of Brickfields or the culturally rich enclave of Little India in Klang, you'll notice a transformation in the air. Deepavali is more than just a festival. It's a vibrant tapestry of traditions, symbolising the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Before the first diya (oil lamp) is lit, homes are thoroughly cleaned—representing the removal of negativity and impurity from one's life, making space for positivity and light.
During this time, you'll witness the meticulous creation of kolams, intricate patterns made from coloured rice or flour, gracing the entrances of homes, buildings and streets. These artistic expressions are not just decorations—they are a warm welcome to all who pass by, a visual invitation to enter a world of culture and tradition.
But it's the illumination that truly captures the essence of Deepavali. Diyas are meticulously placed to bring a warm and inviting radiance to homes, temples, and public spaces. This soft, flickering glow symbolises the victory of knowledge over ignorance, and it's believed to banish spiritual darkness from our lives.
Throughout the world, Deepavali is also a feast for the taste buds. Families prepare a delightful array of dishes and sweets, from savoury delights like chicken curry, biryani, and vegetable kurma to sweet treats like laddoos and palkova. And when it comes to the quintessential Deepavali staple, the beloved murukku takes centre stage, satisfying the taste buds of all who indulge. This beloved delicacy, with its unique spiral shape, is a time-honoured art passed down through generations. Families gather with a shared purpose—to create these crispy delights that signify the arrival of Deepavali. The process is a blend of culinary expertise and heartfelt togetherness. Deep-fried to golden perfection, murukku acquires a satisfying crunch that can be heard in every bite.
