Information Technology Courses for a Successful Tech Career

Monash University Computer Lab

Information technology is revolutionising the way we communicate, conduct business, and relax. A degree in information technology offers a wealth of career opportunities in computer systems, cloud computing, network administration, software development, and IT management, along with, attractive salary packages, and flexibility. Best of all, you don't need a background in science to apply for a bachelor’s degree in information technology.

Our information technology courses' common core units will give you a solid foundation in the key areas of computing and information technology, such as technical skills, operating systems, and computer networks. As you progress in your degree, you will choose from specialised units to gain technical expertise and the confidence to focus on specific areas such as software development, data management, or computer technology.

What You will learn from our IT courses

Here are the key topics you will master in our information technology courses:

1. Fundamentals of computer systems

Gain a solid understanding of computer systems, including the interaction between hardware, software, and operating systems.

2. Networking

Learn the essentials of computer networks, including network protocols, topologies, and network security, to ensure efficient and secure communication systems.

3. Software development

Acquire practical programming skills in various programming languages, software development, database management, and web development, enabling you to create robust software solutions.

4. Cybersecurity

Study network security, malware analysis, and incident response to prepare for real-world challenges in protecting computer systems from external threats.

5. Data analysis and data science

Develop expertise in collecting, analysing, and interpreting data using statistical methods, data visualisation tools, and advanced techniques in data management, especially relevant for Data Science.

By mastering these areas, you'll be well-equipped to pursue a wide range of careers in the dynamic field of information technology.

Industry links and internships

Our Industry-Based Learning (IBL) program commenced at the campus in 2013. High-achieving IT undergraduates may apply for a place in the program, which involves a scholarship and a 22-week industry placement during the third year of the degree. The placement is part of the curriculum and is formally assessed and credited towards the degree in information technology.

Students also undertake vacation employment during holiday periods. We receive a number of approaches throughout the year from employers interested in recruiting our students for internships within the field of information technology. These opportunities are publicised to all students of the School of Information Technology.
