Salam Raya beyond words
24 March 2025
The beautiful celebration of Hari Raya isn’t complete without ketupat, rendang, and kuih raya, but its true essence lies in the tradition of seeking forgiveness from elders. During Hari Raya, the phrase “Maaf Zahir dan Batin” resonates with many Malaysians. This festive occasion, also known as Eid, is one of the most notable festivals for Muslim communities worldwide as it marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
“Nak duit raya? Salam dulu” is a playful yet meaningful act during Hari Raya, translating to “If you want the money, you have to salam first,” which goes beyond a simple greeting. It symbolises seeking forgiveness from parents and loved ones.

In the Muslim community, “Salam” is a term that signifies peace. During Hari Raya, younger family members express their apologies and seek forgiveness from their elders by kissing their hands and raising them to their foreheads. Among peers, “Salam Raya” is done through hugs or handshakes while saying, “Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir dan Batin.” This tradition is said to nurture self-reflection and help mend relationships.
Salam Raya may have many other forms, but the most common one follows a particular order. Within families, children first offer salam to their parents and grandparents, followed by aunts, uncles, and older relatives. They then exchange salam with siblings, cousins, and friends.

Salam Raya is more than just a cultural tradition. It holds profound emotional meaning. It is common for families to shed tears while asking for forgiveness. It helps to strengthen relationships, promotes forgiveness, and represents a new beginning. Each Salam Raya is a sincere opportunity to let go of hard feelings and welcome new beginnings.
