GEMS is a dream come true

1. Tell us about GEMS.

The Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) program offers a 100 per cent tuition fee waiver for three years and three months of PhD. The PhD duration includes placement of up to a year in Australia and the remaining in Malaysia, with monthly stipends provided throughout.

2. Why did you apply for GEMS?

My former supervisors at Monash University Malaysia introduced me to the program. Under their supervision, I developed a strong research interest while completing my final year research project and aspired to pursue a PhD after my degree. The scholarship provides substantial financial support for me to pursue my aspiration, and having supervisors from Malaysia and Australian campuses enables greater cross-campus collaborations that will be valuable for my work.

3. How did you choose your planned program of study?

My research experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence has built a robust foundation for my work. The fact that the same supervisors previously supervised me enables smoother planning of my study program since they are familiar with the extent of my knowledge in the research area. The graduate research office and unit coordinators are also easily accessible for other assistance and support.

4. What do you hope to gain from the Monash experience?

I hope to expand my research and social network, especially during my placement in Australia. Besides, the requirement to contribute to academic support activities allows me to gain tutoring and teaching experience, which will be beneficial if I pursue a similar career.

5. How has GEMS assisted you?

The monthly stipend scholarship is essential for my study and living expenses. During my placement in Australia, I am also offered a grant to cover the travel cost and initial expenses overseas. Overall, I'm able to financially support myself without burdening my family.
