Lim Shun Di’s journey at the university has been instrumental in shaping her career, taking her from an IT student to a seasoned professional in the fast-paced world of advertising and marketing. An avid gamer from a young age, Shun Di’s passion for technology naturally led her to pursue a degree in IT. However, an important experience during her final semester opened the door to an unexpected but rewarding career path.

“In my final semester at Monash University Malaysia, I attended a business case presentation boot camp, where my team took second place. That’s where I met my first boss, securing a job just as I graduated and took a leap of faith into the world of advertising and marketing for the next 5 years,” said Shun Di. This experience marked the beginning of her career and highlighted the value of stepping out of her comfort zone.

A significant milestone in her study journey at the university was her involvement in the CHIP (Computer Hub Information Projects) club. As part of the club, she helped organise gaming competitions and other events, which in turn helped to strengthen her teamwork and leadership skills. “Being at the club, I learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration to reach our goals together,” Shun Di said. “It showed me how collaboration and communication are just as important as technical skills.”

Shun Di’s transition from IT to marketing was challenging, but the foundational skills she gained at the university prepared her to adapt and thrive. Her technical background gave her an analytical edge, proving to be a huge asset for her when developing marketing strategies that are data-driven. At the same time, the experience that she had in problem-solving and project-based learning during her time at the university gave her the confidence to try out an entirely new field.

Looking back on her journey, Shun Di offers valuable advice to future students. “Technical skills will get you far, but soft skills will take you even further. Every interview is an opportunity to learn how to sell yourself and your experience to a prospective employer. Stay hungry and curious - step beyond your comfort zone and explore beyond your job scope. Lastly, remember that when one door closes, another opens.”

Shun Di’s story shows the power of embracing new opportunities and adapting to unexpected career paths. Her experience at Monash laid the foundation for her success, equipping her with the skills and confidence to navigate the advertising and marketing landscape.
