Clinical psychologists use their knowledge of psychology and mental health for the assessment, diagnosis, formulation, treatment and prevention of psychological problems and mental illness across the lifespan.
The Master of Clinical Psychology prepares you for work as a clinical psychologist, offering coursework that will develop your knowledge and skills in psychology and mental health. You will be equipped to work with clients, assessing, diagnosing, formulating, treating, and preventing psychological problems and mental illnesses across their lifespan. You will gain generalised and specialised clinical skills to manage complex mental health problems, that are culturally responsive, in order to help people thrive.
This course includes four placements supervised by experienced clinical psychologists, as well as a clinical research project that has the scope to positively impact the community under the guidance of experienced academics.

Part A. Applied academic studies in clinical psychology (72 credit points)
These studies will equip you to competently and ethically apply advanced psychological knowledge and skills to mental health challenges in the community. The research project will incorporate a critical review of the relevant literature and may take the form of a service evaluation, experimental study, systematic review or meta-analysis.

Part B. Clinical placement in psychology (30 credit points)
These opportunities will enable you to apply theory to practice under the supervision of experienced clinical supervisors. You'll complete four clinical placements in different hospital or community settings with direct client contact, accumulating valuable professional experience.

Qualified clinical psychologists can pursue various career paths:
- the clinical pathway will open doors to work at hospitals, mental health clinics or private practices, where you’ll provide therapeutic interventions and psychological assessment.
- the academic pathway offers opportunities to continue with your PhD studies, leading to teaching or research positions at universities and colleges.
- the corporate pathway will let you serve as a professional consultant, applying your psychological expertise to improve mental health in the workplace.
To enter Monash University, you must satisfy particular academic, English language and age requirements.
To apply for the Master of Clinical Psychology, you must have completed a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) (or equivalent) accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), or a qualification assessed as equivalent by APAC, with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70 or a CGPA of 3.1. The qualification must have been completed within the last 10 years.
If your qualification is not listed as APAC-accredited (please refer to the APAC website), you will be required to obtain an assessment of your psychology qualifications through the Australian Psychological Society (APS). For details and to submit your application for the APS assessment process (a service fee applies), please visit APS – Assessment of Overseas Qualifications.
The APS typically provides an outcome via email within 90 days (12 weeks). Once received, please forward the outcome email from APS along with a copy of the Statement of Psychology Qualifications to mum.admissions@monash.edu for further evaluation.

A. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Provide your most recent CV.
B. Two Referee Reports
- Provide two confidential referee reports completed by either:
- two academics, one should preferably be your research supervisor; or
- one academic and one professional referee, a person who has known you in a context other than academia.
C. Selection Interview (short-listed applicants only)
- Attend an interview that consists of a multi-station assessment process.
Admission to this course is highly competitive and places are limited. Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee entry. The final ranked list of applicants will be determined based on academic merit, CV, referee reports, and performance at interviews.
