Information drives businesses. Without it, they cease to function. Whether for day-to-day operations or strategic decision-making, there is an imperative to record, manage and use information.
This course prepares you for careers in big data analytics, business intelligence, systems design, planning and management, as well as knowledge and information management.
You’ll gain the expertise to design solutions to business information problems, and to offer strategic guidance to organisations that will enhance their management and governance.

Credit exemption
If you have a previous IT qualification, you may be able to accelerate your study and graduate in one and a half years instead of two.
The course is structured in three parts. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A.
Part A. Foundations for advanced business information systems
Intended for students who do not have previous training in IT, these units provide an introduction to information systems and business concepts, including system design and analysis as applied in professional practice. You'll learn basic software programming and development concepts and database technology.
Part B. Core master's study
These studies draw on best practices within business information systems to gain critical understanding of the theories and practice relating to information systems and business process design, IT strategy, IT governance, IT management and related issues. Your studies will focus on project management as well as a choice of several areas of enterprise IT and information management practice.
Part C. Advanced practice
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work in the broad realm of business information systems. You'll have two options:

This course caters to students from a variety of backgrounds. If you have not previously studied IT, the course includes preparatory units that will give you the IT knowledge needed for the remainder of the course.
Credit exemption
If you already have a degree in IT, you can accelerate your study with a credit exemption from the preparatory units in the course and graduate in 1.5 years on full-time study.
Industry experience or research
Choose between an industry experience program and work on a studio project, or a research project and complete a minor thesis. If you plan on pursuing a PhD after completing this master’s degree, take the research option.

You’ll gain an understanding of business information systems to a level of depth and sophistication consistent with senior professional practice.
Flexibility
Choose between full-time or part-time study. As a part-time student, you’ll have access to the same resources as your full-time peers.

The highly flexible degree covers the business IT spectrum from supporting business operations through to supporting managers’ decision making. You may find work as a business analyst, systems analyst, consultant, project leader, IT manager or information management specialist, in areas like:
- business information systems
- data science and data mining
- business intelligence and knowledge management
- information systems and management
- IT governance and software development methodologies
- research for mobile apps, wearable technologies, image processing, intelligent health, robotics and data science
- practical industrial upskilling with leading companies or NGOs.
To enter Monash University, you must satisfy particular academic, English language and age requirements.
To apply for the Master of Business Information Systems, you must meet either one of the criteria below :
Entry level 1: 96 points to complete - Duration: 2 years full-time, 4 years part-time:
An Australian bachelor degree, not necessarily in IT, with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60 or equivalent qualification approved by the faculty.
Entry level 2: 72 points to complete - Duration: 1.5 years full-time, 3 years part-time:
An Australian bachelor degree in a cognate discipline with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60, relating to information systems or with an information systems major, with completed studies in java or python programming and algorithms, databases, systems analysis and design. Plus an understanding of the major enterprise IT applications and their architectures, including enterprise/transaction processing systems and analytical/ business intelligence systems, or equivalent qualification approved by the faculty.
The pathway to Entry Level 1 or Entry Level 2 is subject to an internal assessment of the applicant's qualification to conform to the MQA Program Standards for Computing.
