The Medical Engineering and Technology (MET) Hub, established in May 2024, is meant to pave the way for groundbreaking research in biomedical engineering at Monash University Malaysia. This initiative was pioneered by bringing together academics from the School of Engineering and the School of Information Technology (IT), the MET Hub seeks to create a multidisciplinary environment to address real-world clinical challenges and advance healthcare solutions.

As part of its mission, the hub unites expertise from diverse engineering disciplines such as mechanical, robotics and mechatronics, and chemical engineering. Its focus on biomedical engineering research seeks to overcome the lack of visibility this field currently receives, mainly due to the absence of a dedicated Biomedical Engineering department at Monash University Malaysia. The MET Hub bridges this gap, providing a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and impactful research that directly benefits students, academics, and the healthcare industry.

A key element of the MET Hub’s mission is identifying and addressing unmet clinical challenges through innovative technological solutions. These solutions aim to create tangible benefits for healthcare providers and patients alike. The hub actively engages with industry partners to achieve this, promoting collaborations that lead to impactful projects.

Associate Professor Ooi Ean Hin, the Director of the MET Hub, explains, “Our hub aims to be the focal point of biomedical engineering research in Monash University Malaysia. We aim to provide opportunities for students to be involved in addressing real-world clinical and healthcare problems by developing innovative solutions to these problems. Faculty members, in turn, can guide and mentor the students, and apply their knowledge and technical expertise to bring positive change to their communities and beyond.”

MET Hub’s recent efforts include hosting workshops and hands-on sessions to equip participants with cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills. One such event, held on 13 November 2024, featured sessions on computational modelling, artificial intelligence in healthcare, and hands-on applications such as motion capture and mechanical ventilation. These workshops, led by experts such as Associate Professor Ooi Ean Hin, Dr Maxine Tan Yen Ling, Dr Alpha Agape Gopalai and Dr Chiew Yeong Shiong, are instrumental in showcasing the intersection of technology and medicine.

MET Hub is also committed to long-term collaborations with healthcare organisations. These partnerships provide students with opportunities to work on real-world clinical problems and ensure that academics can apply their expertise to address pressing healthcare needs.

Students eager to make a mark in the biomedical engineering field can engage with the MET Hub by joining research projects, participating in interdisciplinary programs, or contributing to industry collaborations. The hub also provides mentorship opportunities for students who wish to propose their ideas.

The MET Hub comprises 17 members from various engineering and IT disciplines, making it a multidisciplinary initiative. With Emeritus Professor Ng Kwan Hoong serving as an external advisor, the hub is well-positioned to drive impactful research and inspire the next generation of innovators in medical engineering.

As Monash University Malaysia continues to champion academic excellence, the MET Hub exemplifies the university’s commitment to preparing students for the future while tackling some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare today.
