Gender Differences and Brain Ageing

Gender differences in brain ageing is a complex topic, which is poorly understood. Ageing, hormones, genes and social experience all have an impact on brain health. Cognitive decline, neurodegenerative (Alzheimer’s) and neuropsychiatric diseases often coincide with reproductive ageing and are more prevalent in women than men. Given that sex hormones deplete during normal ageing, it is reasonable to hypothesize that sex hormones might play an important neuroprotective role against neurodegenerative diseases.

Professor Ishwar will show that the use of new brain imaging techniques and natural bioidentical hormones can provide valuable insights and possible cures for neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Head of Neuroscience, Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences

Professor Ishwar Parhar is an internationally recognised neuroendocrinologist. He heads the Neuroscience Research Program at Monash University Malaysia. His team is mapping the neural circuits for reproduction that will yield valuable approaches to reduce brain disorders due to ageing. Professor Ishwar has published over 100 high-impact research papers with over 2500 ISI citations. Some of his research work has appeared in top journals such as PNAS, Progress in Neurobiology and a write-up in Nature. He serves as an Associate Editor of several leading neuroscience journals and as a scientific Advisor to Government Bodies. He is the founding president of NeuroMalaysia Society and has received many awards including the most recent Top Research Scientist Award by the Academy of Science Malaysia. He has held appointments at the National University of Singapore, The Rockefeller University, New York, USA and the Nippon Medical School, Tokyo, Japan. He is the founding Director of the Brain Research Institute Monash Sunway (BRIMS) at Monash University Malaysia.
