Monash University Malaysia and Institut Sukan Negara (ISN) formalised a two-year strategic collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing athlete performance by cultivating mental toughness and wellbeing within Malaysia's high-performance sports ecosystem.

The partnership marks an important milestone in strengthening the integration of psychological support services, sports science, sports medicine, and professional development for Malaysian athletes. It will be implemented through a mutually beneficial framework, bringing together the university’s academic, research, and professional expertise with ISN’s experience in sports science, sports medicine, sports technology, and coaching development.

Brigadier General Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Arshil Moideen (Rtd), Head of School, Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia, highlighted that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening athlete mental resilience while opening doors for wider interdisciplinary collaboration in the future.

“This Memorandum of Understanding sets out our shared commitment to advancing the mental toughness and psychological well-being of national athletes. However, as I have mentioned earlier, this collaboration extends beyond that specific scope. There is tremendous potential for broader partnerships involving other schools within Monash University Malaysia, as well as various disciplines within the School of Medicine and Health Sciences itself,” said Professor Arshil.

Professor Arshil also noted that the partnership builds on several collaborative initiatives undertaken between the university and ISN over the past year. “These sessions demonstrated in the most practical way possible how much can be achieved when researchers and practitioners from ISN come together and work side by side,” he said.

Dr Vellapandian Ponnusamy, Chief Executive Officer of ISN, described the collaboration as a strategic step towards strengthening athlete support systems and advancing the role of psychology within high-performance sport.

“Elite sporting success today extends beyond physical preparation. Mental resilience, psychological wellbeing, and emotional readiness are increasingly recognised as critical determinants of athletic performance. This partnership represents an important step in ensuring our athletes receive comprehensive support that addresses both performance and wellbeing,” said Dr Vellapandian.

A key component of the agreement is the establishment of an advanced reciprocal referral mechanism, enabling the university and ISN to facilitate the management of complex psychological and clinical cases requiring specialised intervention and expertise.

The collaboration will also promote knowledge sharing and professional development through joint seminars, workshops, case discussions, academic engagements, and future research initiatives in sports medicine, psychology, and athlete performance. In addition, it will create opportunities for student placements and industrial training, allowing Monash University Malaysia students to gain practical exposure within Malaysia’s elite sporting environment.

As an immediate outcome of the partnership, both institutions will jointly implement a Mental Toughness Workshop designed to strengthen athletes’ psychological resilience and mental preparedness. The initiative forms part of a broader train-the-trainers approach aimed at developing sustainable expertise and capacity-building programs at the national level.

Under this initiative, Monash University Malaysia will lead the development of training content, learning modules, and evidence-based protocols related to mental toughness and athlete psychology. ISN will facilitate athlete participation, identify targeted practitioners and sports psychologists, provide logistical support, and ensure the program is contextualised to meet the specific demands of the Malaysian sporting landscape.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment by the university and ISN to promote athlete wellbeing and strengthen Malaysia’s competitive advantage through science-driven approaches to sports performance.
