Showcasing innovation and impact through IT projects

The School of Information Technology (SoIT) successfully hosted the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Project Showcase 2026, bringing together students, academics, members of the university community, and industry professionals to celebrate innovation, research, and project-based learning.

The showcase featured 21 student teams comprising 10 undergraduate teams and 11 postgraduate teams, involving a total of 106 student presenters. The event aimed to provide students with the opportunity to present their research and final year projects while demonstrating the potential impact of their work in addressing real-world challenges and benefiting society.

Professor Ir Raphael Phan (Deputy Head, School of Information Technology) delivered the event’s opening remarks, highlighting the importance of innovation, collaboration, and industry engagement in developing future-ready graduates capable of addressing contemporary challenges through technology and research.

Following the opening ceremony, attendees explored the project exhibition spaces located across campus. Postgraduate teams showcased their projects at the Rock area, while undergraduate teams presented their work at the Exhibition Room and Library Exhibition Space. The distributed showcase format encouraged visitors to engage directly with student teams, learn about their project development journeys, and explore the practical applications of their work.

The showcase featured a diverse range of projects spanning artificial intelligence, healthcare, biodiversity conservation, high-performance computing, and emergency response technologies. Through demonstrations and discussions, students showcased innovative solutions designed to improve the quality of life and support sustainable development.

For the postgraduate category, students developed projects aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

The School was honoured to welcome industry judges and representatives from Roiquant, Zetrix AI, SLB, MRANTI, Sunway Digital, Mewah, Troola, KPMG, BP, Hexa IoT, and KingdomCity.

For the Undergraduate category, the First Place award was presented to team AI Lie Detector: Spotting Microexpressions, an AI-powered deception detection system that analyses facial microexpressions using Facial Action Units (AUs) to identify indicators of truthful and deceptive statements. Second Place was awarded to team GPU-Accelerated Mini-Cluster with SLURM, MPI, and CUDA: Design, Deployment, and Scaling Benchmarks, while Third Place was awarded to team Drone-Aided Emergency Response.

For the Postgraduate category, two teams received the Best Project Award, with Team BioWira recognised for developing an interactive, pedagogy-driven and gamified biodiversity learning platform that inspires children to explore and appreciate Malaysia’s rich biodiversity, and Team ParkiCare for its responsive caregiver support platform designed to assist non-clinical family caregivers in managing the daily needs of individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. The platform leverages AI-driven reminders and recommendations to support medication schedules and daily routines, helping to improve consistency of care and enhance overall patient wellbeing.

Throughout the showcase, attendees were also invited to vote for their favourite postgraduate project, with a total of 256 votes submitted for the People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice Award went to Team Shell & Fin, an innovative platform that educates users about invasive species and enables them to explore fish profiles. The platform integrates machine learning to assess fish health and promotes responsible pet ownership through educational resources on the proper care of pet fish and turtles in Malaysia.

The event concluded with a closing ceremony and prize-giving session officiated by Dr Vishnu at Auditorium 1, where outstanding projects were recognised for their innovation, technical excellence, and potential societal impact. The SoIT Undergraduate and Postgraduate Project Showcase reflects SoIT’s commitment to nurturing innovative graduates equipped to contribute to society and address contemporary challenges through technology, research, and innovation.
