Genomics Platform
The Monash University Malaysia Genomics Platform (MUMGP) is an ISO9001 certified infrastructure platform that provides the highest quality of massively parallel, high-throughput nucleic acid sequencing and bioinformatics services to researchers, students and clients, both internal and external, local and international. We provide short- and long-read sequencing of whole or partial genomes and transcriptomes for a wide range of organisms, thus, supporting multidisciplinary research. MUMGP also supports the undergraduate science teaching program and provides training apprenticeships and research internships for undergraduate students and visiting scientists in genomics and bioinformatics.
MUMGP staff provide the following high-quality services:
- Nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) extraction from a variety of biological and environmental sources.
- Nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) library preparation and quality checks.
- Generation of short or long-read nucleic acid sequences.
- Consultation and assistance with study design.
- Troubleshooting technical problems and bioinformatics support.
- Training in genomics and bioinformatics.

Specialist Services
Our instruments enable us to provide sequencing services for three of the four currently used high-throughput sequencing platforms and allow for both short- or long-read sequencing of whole or partial genomes and transcriptomes for a wide range of species and organisms. These tools also enable us to survey the environmental genomic landscape and thus, support diverse fields of study and multidisciplinary research. MUMGP also supports the undergraduate science teaching program in genomics and bioinformatics and provides training apprenticeships and research internships for undergraduate students in genomics and bioinformatics. MUMGP also routinely provides training and workshops for internal and external researchers in genomics and bioinformatics.
Specialist service #1: Short-read sequencing
The Illumina MiSeq short-read sequencing is the core service at MUMGP. The short-read sequencing service supports a wide range of applications including microbial population profiling using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) resequencing, targeted amplicon sequencing, restriction-site associated DNA (RAD) sequencing, bacterial or viral whole genome sequencing, transcriptomics, epigenomics, and environmental DNA (eDNA) characterisations.
Specialist service #2: Long-read sequencing
Our long-read sequencing services are based on the Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinIon and PromethION flowcells and PacBio Sequel IIe System platforms, providing options for researchers based on the suitability of research objectives and available budget. The long-read sequencing services support de novo whole genome sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, partial or full-length 16S RNA sequencing and transcriptomics (RNA Sequencing and Iso-Seq).
Specialist service #3: Bioinformatics services
All bioinformatics analyses are performed after understanding the objectives and requirements of each project. We strongly encourage researchers and clients to set up a consultation session with us before engaging these services to ensure that the study designs are appropriate and that the data is generated according to the investigator’s requirements.
Other capabilities
- DNA and RNA quantitation using Agilent TapeStation and Femto Pulse Systems
- DNA shearing using Covaris M220
- Equipment access (Covaris, Qubit Flex, Maxwell RSC 48)
- Bioinformatics support and training for staff, students and collaborators.

Publications and Acknowledgements
Your use of the Monash Malaysia Research Infrastructure is heavily subsidised by the University. To comply with internal reporting obligations, the platform must report on the number and type of publications produced by users of the platform/ facility. It is essential that we have this information so that we can continue to provide the advanced instrumentation, staff, training and assistance that you and other researchers require to undertake your work.
It is a condition of use of platform that:
1. You acknowledge the platform and any significant assistance provided by the staff members in your publications;
2. Platform staff members who made a significant scholarly contribution should be co-authors on the publication, in accordance with Monash’s Research Authorship And Attribution Policy, see Research Authorship and Attribution Policy.
Please acknowledge MUMGP in your publications by including:
"The authors acknowledge the use of instruments and scientific and technical assistance at the Monash Malaysia Genomics Platform (MUMGP)”.
Or,
if the work was carried out with help from MUMGP staff (but not enough to justify coauthorship):
"The authors acknowledge the use of instruments and scientific and technical assistance of Name of GP Staff Member at the Monash Malaysia Genomics Platform (MUMGP).”
Please always notify the relevant platform when acknowledgment is made.
