Call for GEMS applications for the 2026 intake is now open!

The Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) program aims to bring the best and brightest PhD students to Monash University Malaysia, where they can work with international top-class research teams on some of the world's core challenges.The scholarship includes a study-away program of up to 9 months at either Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

The GEMS program offers 15 scholarships each year, with each recipient receiving funding for 42 months.

Scholarship information

Duration,  stipend and other benefits

Stipend: 42 months, including up to 9 months in Australia, Indonesia or India.

  • The period in Malaysia: a monthly stipend of RM 2,950 for 33-36 months.
  • The period in Australia: a monthly stipend of RM 8,500 for up to 9 months.
  • The period in Indonesia (Monash University Indonesia) or India (IITB): a monthly stipend of RM2,950 up to 9 months, similar to the rate in Malaysia.
  • A grant of RM 9,000 is provided to subsidise costs, including visa, insurance and travel.
  • Depending on your school of enrolment, you may be funded for conference attendance, fieldwork or other activities relevant to your research project.

Tuition  Fee Waiver

100% tuition fee waiver up to a maximum of 4 years full-time equivalent under the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS), valued at RM 218,880 for international students and RM 193,920 for domestic students (at 2026 fee rates).

Candidates are only permitted to select one GEMS topic. Applicants must submit a research proposal relevant to the chosen topic.

Admission and eligibility criteria

To enter Monash University, you must satisfy particular academic and English language requirements.

To be eligible for GEMS, you must possess a minimum academic qualification of First Class Honours (H1) or its equivalence (H1E) recognised by Monash Malaysia.

Application process

When you apply for admission into your preferred degree program you will be able to select your scholarship type. No separate application is required.

However, before applying for a GEMS, it is recommended that you first contact the main supervisor for your preferred research topic listed below. Please provide details of your academic background and achievements to the supervisor so that they can assess your suitability for the GEMS research topic of your interest.

GEMS Applications must be submitted through this link, following the application submission guide and including the following documents:

  • Academic transcripts and certificates (Certified true copies with grading scales)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Personal statement on why you think you are suited for the GEMS program (300 words)
  • Research proposal for one preferred research topic listed below
  • Proof of English proficiency (Based on Monash University English language requirements)
  • Proof of Publications (if any)

Scholarship conditions

Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) recipients are required to contribute a maximum of 240 hours per year in academic support and/or research support activities as determined by the Managing School.

GEMS recipients must commence their mobility term in the Host Institution (Australia/ Indonesia/ India) no later than 18 months from their course commencement date.

GEMS recipients must commence in the year the scholarship is awarded. The successful candidate is encouraged to enrol as soon as possible, and no later than 15 October 2026.
