The new life with Gerontechnology
Malaysia transitioned to an ageing nation in 2020, with more than 7% of our population aged 65 and above and counting. The problems of ageing are treating diseases, degeneration, and the quality of life of the old and their caregivers. It should involve the seamless integration of facilities and activities for better living, using technology-enabled equipment and services. One such technology is Gerontechnology. Gerontechnology refers to developing technology and designing an environment for independent living and social participation of older adults in good health, comfort, and safety. It combines technology and gerontology that covers the social, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of ageing.
Monash University Malaysia established the Gerontechnology Laboratory in 2016, the pioneering research laboratory in Malaysia. The Gerontechnology Laboratory builds upon Monash's longstanding tradition of creating socially relevant research, innovating educational practices, influencing policymaking, fostering community-university partnerships, and sharing best practices with others. Our work aims to address practical problems within our resources of helping the aged and infirm and their caregivers. This talk shared about the multidisciplinary and collaborative research and applications around Gerontechnology.
