ETEC: Bridging global engineering through collaboration
Monash University Malaysia’s School of Engineering hosted the third Engineering Tropical Exchange Challenge (ETEC) from 29 January to 7 February 2024. This esteemed program first began in 2019 remains a cornerstone for engineering students seeking to immerse themselves in Malaysia’s dynamic engineering landscape. The ETEC program was designed and developed by the School of Engineering in conjunction with Monash Abroad and the Faculty of Engineering.

Supported by the New Colombo Plan, ETEC offered an enrichment challenge for 11 bright Australian minds and five talented Malaysian peers. The 10-day challenge immersed students in hands-on engineering practice, Malaysian history and culture, expert-led workshops, industry visits, and a collaborative community project with the Orang Asli. The program aims to grow critical engineering skills such as leadership, global awareness, indigenous and cross-cultural engagement, equipping students to engage and succeed in an increasingly interconnected engineering sector.

Native Discovery, The Habitat, Latitude 5, Teja Batik, and Royal Selangor Pewter lent their expertise and resources, enhancing the program’s impact and scope. Industry partners, including Ajinomoto, VAT Manufacturing, and Vitrox Technologies, were pivotal in providing students with first-hand insights into real-world engineering applications and the latest industry trends.

Reflecting on his experience, Benjamin Ho shared, “The program demonstrated the significance of considering diverse communities’ perspectives when devising engineering solutions. It has expanded my outlook and enhanced my collaborative skills.”

Likewise, Callan Buckley recounted, “I had submitted my application for the ETEC program on a whim with zero expectations. I wasn't even expecting to be accepted into the program. Little did I know it was going to be a life-changing experience. Being exposed to a different culture was eye-opening. Connecting with new friends, adapting to new situations, and being able to explore a new place are some of the many things that I’ll remember ETEC for.”
