Monash University Malaysia joined Sunway University and Taylor’s University in formalising the Triple Alliance, a strategic collaboration to advance education, research and innovation and create greater opportunities for students, staff and communities.

Bringing together more than 64,000 students and 5,000 staff, the partnership combines the complementary strengths, expertise and networks of the three universities. The alliance fulfils a long-held vision of Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group and Chancellor of Sunway University, to bring the institutions together through a shared commitment to higher education.

At the launch, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah reflected on how competition and collaboration can support the development of higher education. “Competition challenges us to raise our standards. It pushes us to challenge the status quo, pursue excellence, and become better than we were yesterday. But I always believe that competition and collaboration can coexist. Coexist together, they bring out the best in us,” he said.

“Universities have a responsibility not only to educate, but to work together to address the complex challenges facing our societies. The Triple Alliance demonstrates what is possible when leading institutions unite around a shared purpose. By combining our complementary strengths, we can broaden opportunities for our students, accelerate research and deepen our engagement with industry, government and communities. Together, we are helping position Malaysia as a globally recognised hub for education, innovation and talent development,” said Professor Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia.

YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Minister of Higher Education Malaysia, also emphasised the opportunity for universities to work together while continuing to pursue excellence within their respective institutions. “University can remain competitors in excellence while becoming partners in impact,” he said.

The alliance’s work is centred on five key areas: education, research, shared resources, student life and community impact. Initiatives across these areas will connect the universities’ academic capabilities and facilities while creating opportunities for collaboration beyond individual campuses.

A dedicated governance framework, comprising a Governing Council and thematic working groups, will guide the partnership and support the development of joint initiatives with long-term, measurable outcomes.

The launch was followed by the inaugural performance of the Triple Alliance Philharmonic Orchestra, bringing together 160 student musicians and alumni from the three universities.

Through the Triple Alliance, Monash University Malaysia, Sunway University and Taylor’s University will work together to expand opportunities for learners and researchers, address shared challenges and contribute to the development of Malaysia and the wider region.
