The scientist who works for a sustainable future

Get acquainted with the dynamic Professor Sadequr Rahman – a trailblazer in Plant Genetics and the Associate Head of Graduate Research at Monash University Malaysia. Beyond his academic accolades, he is a visionary on a mission: to champion our planet's sustainability with passion and purpose.

Professor Sadequr studies on how rice plants produce grains which are so vital for food security. Not only that, his expertise extends beyond plants. He collaborates with colleagues to study birds such as hornbills, crows and falcons to investigate what their DNA can tell us about our planet. He has teamed up with the South-East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO) to examine the bacteria critical for health that are found in the community in Segamat, Johor. He is currently a team leader in the Monash Microbiome Centre which has been established to further investigate such bacteria.

Teamwork makes the dreams work

Professor Sadequr’s vision for a sustainable future is not just a dream, but a mission he is steadfastly committed to. He envisions a society that coexists harmoniously with all living creatures, resonating with our desire for a better world. He firmly believes that every living thing plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and happiness of our planet. Passionate and committed to advocating for eco-friendly initiatives, he actively participates in on-the-ground activities that align with his field.

Professor Sadequr is also part of the Malaysian BioGenome, a project led by Monash University Malaysia Genomics Platform. The project aims to decode the genomes of various species, especially endangered animals like Malayan tigers, tapirs, pangolins, helmeted hornbills, and Borneo elephants, to help protect them. Prof Sadequr has a special interest in South Asian river dolphins and manages an international consortium studying their DNA.

Under the leadership of Professor Sadequr and his team, we can create a significant impact and transform our planet into a safer place for all.
