TransformED 2023: Exploring GenAI and Innovative Teaching.
Monash University Malaysia hosted its annual learning and teaching showcase, TransformED, in collaboration with Monash University Indonesia on 12 December 2023. Over 130 educators from different regions attended the event, including Indonesia, Australia, Singapore, and the United States of America. The main goal of TransformED was to explore various educational approaches and practices, integrating cutting-edge technologies like Generative AI (GenAI). The event allowed presenters to share their recent work, inspire fellow educators, and encourage discussions for future collaborations.
“TransformED served as a platform for the community of practice to share insights, each bringing their diverse backgrounds to the table, sharing practical and innovative ideas. Grateful for the invaluable knowledge gained, this conference has truly elevated my commitment to creating a great learning environment,” shared Zainun Mustafa from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris.

TransformED 2023 was celebrated as Monash University Malaysia's largest TransformED event to date, with 18 presentations and 9 posters. The event focused on key topics in the education sector, such as authentic future-focused curricula and assessment design, GenAI in Higher Education, innovative approaches to learning and teaching; fostering engagement and innovation. The event prioritised interactivity and engagement through a series of activities designed to stimulate discussions on new ideas and teaching approaches. One such activity was student co-creation, where educators discuss possible methods in collaborating with students into designing teaching resources.
Workshop lead, Dr Simran Kaur from the School of Business wrote: “I am grateful for the lively discussions with the very active participants, who shared their triumphs and challenges surrounding aspects such as personalised learning, student voice, simulations, group assessments, and more,” when discussing her workshop where educators shared their recent successes and challenges in a light-hearted sharing session, reflecting on their professional journeys.
One of the highlights of TransformED 2023 was the GenAI workshops, which garnered significant interest from educators. They gained valuable insights into how they can leverage GenAI in the educational sector. Additionally, Monash University Malaysia organised two competitions that underscored the importance of GenAI and innovative educational approaches: the GenAI x Assessment competition and the Engage and Educate - Video Challenge.

TransformED 2023 ended with a thought-provoking roundtable discussion. Three industry leaders representing various facets of GenAI were invited to discuss its impact and the future of GenAI in higher education. This panel provided a unique opportunity for attendees to gain valuable insights into the evolving landscape of AI in education.

TransformED 2023 marked a significant step forward in the field of education, bringing together educators from diverse backgrounds to explore innovative teaching practices and the potential of GenAI. TransformED will continue to grow and evolve, remaining a vital platform for educators to exchange ideas and inspire one another, ultimately shaping the future of education.
