A new era of urban innovation
Monash University Malaysia recently hosted the inaugural Urban Transformation Network (UTN) from 6 May to 8 May 2024. This landmark event was a unique opportunity to synergise efforts across Monash's campuses in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia.
UTN's vision is to advance beyond unsustainable development paths by leveraging research and insights from the Global North. It views urban transformation as a socio-technical endeavour that requires the integration of multilateral, multisectoral, and multidisciplinary knowledge networks. This vision is well-aligned with Monash University's Impact 2030 strategic plan, which addresses global challenges such as thriving communities and climate adaptation, and unites researchers and disciplines across campuses under the "One Monash" approach.
On the first day of the event, the Urban Transformation Seminar 2024 drew around 40 participants from within and outside the university. The seminar served as a platform for sharing cutting-edge research and practical insights aimed at creating resilient and inclusive urban environments. The theme of the public seminar, "Urban Transformation," is closely aligned with Malaysia's 4th National Physical Plan, which focuses on balanced and dynamic growth, spatial sustainability, climate change resilience, liveable environments, and inclusive communities.

The Urban Transformation Networking Mapping Workshop took place on day two, drawing 26 participants. This interactive session facilitated lively discussions on designing cities that are both sustainable and responsive to community needs. Colleagues from the Schools of Engineering, IT, Arts and Social Sciences, Business, Science, and Pharmacy attended the workshop, which focused on design thinking.
Participants engaged in dynamic dialogues about various urban transformation concepts, including sponge cities, walkable cities, and high-density cities. Following the workshop, a field trip to a collaborator's project site allowed participants to immerse themselves in a real-world setting, visualising how the workshop's concepts could be applied practically.
Associate Professor Dr Chow Ming Fai, Dr Susilawati, Associate Professor Dr Poh Phaik Eong and research assistant Geetha Maniam played instrumental roles in organising and leading the events.

Dr Chow emphasised the importance of sustainable urban transformation as Malaysia progresses towards becoming a high-income nation. He stated, "The complexity of this transformation demands a tapestry of diverse disciplines working together to create sustainable solutions. Cities thrive when planners, scientists, engineers, and sociologists unite in their efforts to create vibrant and sustainable urban environments. Integrating insights from economics, environmental science, and public policy, we can develop innovative strategies that address the unique challenges of urbanisation. Collaboration across these fields not only enhances our ability to implement effective solutions but also ensures that our cities are resilient, inclusive, and capable of supporting future generations."
Dr Susilawati highlighted, “The UTN workshop serves as a platform where academics from diverse disciplines come together to address urban challenges, guiding cities away from unsustainable development trajectories toward greater sustainability, liveability, and inclusivity. During the seminar and workshop, I witnessed how socio-technical endeavours including data-driven methods, spatial urban design, and socio-economic principles were applied to improve accessibility and transform urban environments.”
Dr Poh also conveyed, "The UTN workshop has provided a great platform for like-minded researchers from different expertise to share their views, identify gaps, and conceptualise potential solutions to support urban transformation. I am looking forward to the realisation of the concepts that will bring positive and sustainable developments in urban settings around the world."

Participants' feedback highlighted the seminar's success in illustrating the transformative power of community engagement and innovative policies.
An academic participant from the UTN seminar and workshop commented, "The Urban Transformation Seminar and the Urban Transformation Network Mapping Workshop were well-planned and organised. Thank you for the invitations and arrangements. The initiatives from the UTN are pretty interesting. I feel most of these initiatives are directly related to my research interests and expertise."
A postgraduate student remarked, "As a student, participating in the UTN Mapping Workshop was eye-opening. It was exciting to see how theoretical concepts are applied in real-world projects. The UTN events have laid a solid foundation for future research and collaboration. I'm excited about the potential projects that could emerge from these discussions." This sentiment captures the essence of the UTN's mission to empower every voice in shaping the cities of tomorrow.

The inaugural UTN events at Monash University Malaysia successfully brought together experts, academics, and students to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative thinking in urban transformation. By uniting diverse perspectives and expertise, the UTN is paving the way for sustainable urban futures in rapidly evolving cities.
As Monash University continues to lead in this critical area, the lessons and insights from the UTN event will undoubtedly inform and inspire ongoing efforts to create resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban spaces.
