Monash University Malaysia makes strong debut at SUKIPT 2026
Monash University Malaysia contingent at the Sukan Institusi Pendidikan Tinggi (SUKIPT) 2026 Opening Ceremony, hosted by Universiti Malaya.
Monash University Malaysia made its debut as a full contingent at the Sukan Institusi Pendidikan Tinggi (SUKIPT) 2026, marking a significant milestone in the campus’s sporting journey. Hosted by Universiti Malaya from 28 August to 6 September 2026, this year’s national sporting event brought together athletes from 45 higher education institutions across Malaysia.
For the first time, Monash University Malaysia sent a full contingent to a state or national sporting event, with 136 student-athletes representing the campus across 15 sporting events. The contingent was supported by 23 student team managers and Campus Experience staff members, competing in sports including athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, e-sports, shooting, swimming and table tennis.
Among the standout performances was Joel Ling Thai Yu from the School of Business, who delivered a remarkable performance in swimming. Competing in three events, Joel secured Gold in the 50m Backstroke, Silver in the 200m Backstroke and Bronze in the 100m Backstroke. Joel achieved a podium finish in all three of his individual events.
In athletics, Michaela Aria Lin-Qian Siebel Binti Faisal from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences also put in an impressive performance in the 5000m event, earning her a Bronze medal.

The contingent recorded several other notable results. The Men’s Basketball Team finished fourth. Phoebe Wong Hong Yin and Qaisara Sabrina Binti Safriza, both from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, also secured fourth place in the Women’s Table Tennis Singles and Women’s Tennis Singles events, respectively. Overall, Monash University Malaysia finished 25th out of the 45 participating higher education institutions in the medal standings.
SUKIPT 2026 marks an important first step in the continued development of sport at Monash University Malaysia. The campus remains committed to creating greater opportunities for students to pursue sporting excellence, develop their skills and represent Monash on larger competitive platforms.
