Vishaan Kumar Kumarasamy
Course: Bachelor of Business and Commerce, 2019
Nationality: Malaysian
Current role: Audit Manager, EY (Singapore)
Why did you choose to study business?
I've always loved anything to do with numbers, and if you love numbers, you will love the challenges in Accounting and Financial Management. I believe that with accounting and finance knowledge, you should be able to manage your finances properly as well as operate on a functional fiscal plan. On a broader view, you'll learn how to focus on money management, financial recording and reporting, these skills are desired in every industry. For most accountants, it's never hard to find work.
How have your studies at Monash helped to prepare you for the working world?
Monash prepared me well for the corporate world, from the knowledge to the structures of the course. With the presentations and group coursework, I learned how to communicate effectively and meet the deadlines of the assignments which in fact is extremely applicable and essential for my current job as an auditor.
What type of opportunities did you participate in?
I was a sub-committee in MUSA-School of Business. We organised many events such as Zombie fun night, SOB-Movie nights, a study trip to Penang, and more. These activities help me to expand my network and view things from a different angle, which is beneficial for finding career opportunities after graduation.
Did you go for any internships or work placements?
I managed to go for two different internships, one with Sunway Group as a Finance Intern and another with Ernst & Young Malaysia as an audit intern. The experience I had in EY Malaysia really sparked my interest in the audit line, hence I decided to pursue it after graduating from Monash.
Notably, getting the degree from Monash opens many different opportunities for my professional qualifications where I have completed both CIMA and ACCA qualifications almost within a year upon graduating from Monash.
The knowledge I obtained from Monash has provided me with a good platform to perform well in these professional exams. I am honoured to have attained the 2nd Best ACCA Affiliate in Singapore in December 2020.
What did you enjoy most about your student life at Monash?
I love the environment in Monash where other students and lecturers are easy to approach and very encouraging. They prepared me well to pursue my educational goals. I'll never forget all the memories I had with my friends and lecturers.
What is your career goal?
There is plenty to learn in the audit line, you face different issues with different clients. I would love to focus on learning as much as I can in the next 5 to 10 years and hopefully be able to contribute to the company and society.
Monash has taught me so much, the University's motto Ancora Imparo has always provided me with the spirit of continuous learning even after graduation. I am still learning and will not stop learning.
