Why did you choose Monash?

I chose to study at Monash because it is one of the very few universities in Malaysia that provides a quality degree in Psychology. I was also very fascinated by the unique units offered in Monash that can be picked as electives. I could say Monash has definitely met my expectations.

I am extremely grateful for the fact that the course is very well designed with the perfect blend of psychology and arts units, equipping me with the essential knowledge and skills to be a model psychologist and citizen in the future. Exposure to units in global studies, gender studies along with psychology units has enabled me to be socially aware and learn how to apply skills in psychology appropriately.

What do you enjoy most about your student life?

What I loved most about my student life at Monash was the various opportunities available beyond classrooms that enabled us to develop multiple skills, qualities and interests. I would say the fact that the student association in Monash was active and diligent contributed to a complete student life. Being a part of it has given me the opportunity to make the most of my university life. The network I have gained through Monash and my day-to-day interaction at university has also enabled me to confidently present myself regardless of the setting and crowd.

Another unique fact about Monash that particularly makes me very proud to call myself a ‘Monashian’ is that the university is a strong ally when it comes to social issues and constantly promotes equality and inclusivity on campus, in aspects such as gender issues, racism, extending support and visibility for the marginalised and ensuring the campus is a safe space for everyone.

Did you participate in any student activities or opportunities?

I interned at the All Women’s Action Society (AWAM) during the 2nd year of my course. My role was predominantly in the ‘services department’ that consists of free counselling and legal information. The three months I spent at AWAM had a lot to offer me, especially the wholesome experience of working in a civil society. I dealt with various case studies in the field of counselling and legal advice in the context of Politicisation of Ethnicity and Religion (PER), Gender-Based Violence, etc. I could strongly say that the knowledge I had gained during my course enabled me to effectively contribute during the internship period and that the internship experience further helped strengthen the passion I have for the field of psychology and its strong association with social issues.

I was also the Women’s Officer of MUSA 2018 and the experience is absolutely fulfilling and enriching. During my term in MUSA, apart from conducting events that promote gender equality and social awareness, I was also involved in driving campus-wide policy reforms and managing campaigns for social advocacy such as promoting inclusivity and ending sexual harassment/ assault on campus.

Collectively, these two experiences, along with the knowledge I gained through my course, have given me a sense of purpose and direction in life, helping me to clearly narrow down career options with ease and confidence.

What are your career goals?

Through my course, and other experiences during my university such as my internship at the All Women’s Action Society and my role as the MUSA 2018 Women’s Officer, I have realised I have a deep passion for social and global issues. Coupling that with my long-standing passion for mental health, I wish to actively and effectively contribute to society in terms of social/ humanitarian and positive mental health advocacy by being a successful clinical psychologist and a social advocate by nature.
