Why did you choose to study Civil Engineering?
I have an interest in how infrastructure and buildings are designed, constructed, and integrated into everyday life. The idea of creating pathways where there were once obstacles appeals to me.
What type of opportunities did you participate in at Monash?
I was selected by the Department of Engineering in 2015 for the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). This program introduced me to the field of research early in my undergraduate years. Under the supervision of Dr. Mavinakere Raghunandan, I chose the field of Geotechnical Engineering for my UROP research project.
Through this, I was able to contribute to a conference paper that was published during my final undergraduate year. This publication gave me the opportunity to present my research work at IC3G 2016 (International Conference on Geomechanics, Geo-energy, and Geo-resources) held in Melbourne, Australia. Following my graduation with a degree in Civil Engineering in 2016, I commenced my PhD in Geotechnical Engineering at Monash University Australia, which I completed in 2021. During my undergraduate period, I was also a member of the Monash University Malaysia Cricket team.
Did you go for any internships or work placements? If so, where and did the experience help you in terms of career preparation?
I was given the opportunity to contribute to the Lotus Tower Project in Sri Lanka as an intern in 2015. This provided me with hands-on experience, specifically in design work related to large-scale structures. Being part of this high-profile project fuelled my motivation to pursue a career in design work as a Civil Engineer.
What did you enjoy most about your student life at Monash?
It was an amazing student experience. I made life-long friends.
What is your biggest career goal, or what difference would you like to make?
I aspire to make a lasting difference by ensuring the safety, sustainability, and resilience of infrastructure projects, ultimately contributing to the well-being and progress of communities.
