Please tell us briefly about your postgraduate research at Monash

I studied how bacteria in our gut affect our health. Together with my supervisor and colleagues, we found that certain lifestyle choices can change our risk of diseases and identified the specific bacteria involved. Our research suggests that by changing the mix of bacteria in our gut, we might be able to reduce disease risks and improve overall health.

Why did you choose to pursue your postgraduate studies at Monash Malaysia?

Monash provided the confidence I needed to pursue my intellectual goals, thanks to its state-of-the-art research facilities and many renowned researchers in my field of interest. Additionally, Monash’s presence in Malaysia allowed me to experience these benefits without compromising much on the comfort of being close to home.

What type of opportunities did you participate in at Monash?

I briefly volunteered on the editorial board of the Monash Science Symposium, an international academic conference organized and hosted entirely by the Monash postgraduate community. In the latter stages of my doctoral study, I was also fortunate to be invited as a speaker at several international conferences, sharing the stage with established researchers in my field. One notable experience was presenting my research findings at the prestigious Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia for the International Conference of Indonesian Society for Lactic Acid Bacteria and Gut Microbiota.

What did you enjoy most about your student life at Monash?

I met and made friends from all around the globe. This international experience and exposure to diverse cultural backgrounds prove crucial in helping me navigate a multinational working environment in my current role, where I frequently connect and liaise with partners and colleagues from all over the world. Also, the food!

What is your biggest career goal, or what difference would you like to make?

I am fascinated by the limitless potential of data and its ability to drive value for an organization. Currently, I am working to better understand how data is governed, managed and applied to maximize its impact. Given the opportunity, I hope to utilize this knowledge to one day lead a data department, contributing to the organisation's success.
